
Copper-Cobalt Sputtering Target
Copper-cobalt (CuCo) is a largely immiscible alloy system: when sputtered as a thin film, cobalt tends to precipitate as fine magnetic nanoparticles within a non-magnetic copper matrix. This granular structure gives sputtered CuCo films distinctive magnetotransport properties, first reported as giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in heterogeneous Cu-Co alloys in 1992.
Sputtered CuCo granular thin films are studied for magnetoresistive sensor and magnetic read-head research, where the GMR effect arising from spin-dependent scattering at the cobalt nanoparticle-copper interfaces is exploited. Film composition and post-deposition annealing are used to tune the magnetoresistance and particle size for a given application.
