Zinc Sulfide Sputtering Target

Zinc sulfide (ZnS) is a wide-bandgap n-type semiconductor with low optical absorption and a high refractive index across the visible and infrared regions. Sputtered ZnS thin films are non-toxic and offer good lattice matching to CIGS-family absorber materials.

Sputtered ZnS thin films are used as a cadmium-free buffer layer in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin-film solar cells, offering an environmentally safer alternative to cadmium sulfide while providing wider bandgap and improved lattice matching to the absorber. Reactive RF sputtering compatible with in-line CIGS absorber and ZnO window layer deposition makes ZnS well suited to full-sputtering solar module production. ZnS is also used in electroluminescent displays and IR-transparent optical coatings.
