Chromium Oxide Sputtering Target

Chromium oxide (Cr2O3, α-phase) is a hard, chemically stable oxide known for high hardness, low friction, and strong corrosion and oxidation resistance. Sputter-deposited Cr2O3 thin films can reach hardness values well above 20 GPa after suitable annealing, comparable to other advanced hard-coating materials.

Sputtered Cr2O3 thin films are used as wear- and corrosion-protective coatings on bearings, seals, and magnetic recording heads, as refractory protective layers, and as the top layer in CrN/CrAlN/Cr2O3 multilayer coatings for wear and corrosion protection in marine and industrial environments. Cr2O3 films are also studied as gas-sensing layers and black solar-selective absorber coatings.
