Chromium Carbide Sputtering Target

Chromium carbide (Cr3C2) is a hard, refractory ceramic material with high thermal and chemical stability. Sputtered Cr3C2 thin films retain excellent wear resistance, hardness, and thermal conductivity, and can be reactively sputtered with nitrogen to form even harder chromium carbonitride (CrCN) coatings.

Sputtered Cr3C2 thin films are used as hard, wear-resistant protective coatings for cutting tools and industrial components. Reactive radio-frequency magnetron sputtering of a Cr3C2 target in a nitrogen-argon atmosphere has been used to produce super-hard CrCN coatings on cemented carbide cutting tools, improving wear resistance and extending tool life during machining.
