Chromium Nitride Sputtering Target

Chromium nitride (CrN) combines high hardness with strong wear resistance and chemical inertness. Reactively sputtered CrN thin films can reach hardness values up to around 38 GPa depending on grain size and residual stress, and offer good corrosion resistance as a widely used alternative to electroplated hard chromium.

Sputtered CrN thin films are used as hard, wear- and corrosion-resistant protective coatings for tooling, dies, and industrial components, including pressure die-casting tools and cutting inserts. CrN coatings are also applied to stainless steel and high-entropy alloy surfaces to improve wear and corrosion performance, and are studied as part of CrN/Cr2O3 and CrN/CrAlN multilayer coating systems for enhanced hardness and oxidation resistance.
